Can You Explain My Different Computer Accounts

As engineering students at George Fox University, you have 3 computer accounts.

1) The Foxmail account - this is managed by IT.

This account will also get you logged into any machine on the universities CAMPUS network. All of these machines are managed by IT.

2) The CSNET account - this account enables you to log into the computers in the CAD lab, Circuits lab, Microprocessor Lab, as well as the computer science lab in EHS117.

These accounts are part of the engineering and computer science network (CSNET) and are distinct from the CAMPUS network managed by IT. The CSNET is managed by the CS dept. If you want to access your account on the CSNET from outside of the CSNET, you can do so using any SecureFTP tool Simply connect to csnet.cs.georgefox.edu and use your CSNET login and password.

FTP has been known to work ;-). You could try ftp://csnet.cs.georgefox.edu and use your CSNET password.

3) The Engineering Web Server (engr.georgefox.edu). - This account allows you to log into the engineering web server.

Your username is the same username as your foxmail account. As time marches on, there will be an increasing number of elements of the web page that will only be visible to authenticated users. This is one reason to log on to the website. You also need to be logged in to edit any Wiki pages.

With your user account you also have a new e-mail address (username at engr.georgefox.edu). This is simply a reflector to your foxmail account. This is mostly of interest to the seniors who are sending out resumes. As the foxmail accounts terminate shortly after graduation, you might want to use the engr.georgefox.edu address for your e-mail. These accounts are intended to stay active for alumni and will serve as an e-mail reflector to wherever you might have an e-mail account.

For those who are linux savvy, this account is on a linux box (RedHat Enterprise Linux) and you can log into it using ssh or sftp to access your filespace. This would be a good location to make personal backups of some of your data. Do not use it as a single point of storage for data as, at the present time, these accounts are not being backed up.

Finally, for those who are web savvy, you can create a public_html directory under your account, and when you direct your browser to http://www.engr.georgefox.edu/~username ( note that the address is www.engr.georgefox.edu and not engr.georgefox.edu ), you will be looking at this directory. So, you can all go ahead and create your own web pages - of course, you want to ensure that you don’t put up anything offensive or such as we will surely terminate your account, report you to student life, give you wedgies, and perform other various unpleasant acts upon you.

If you have any issues, please e-mail the EngineeringComputerManager.
